Behold, the Alpine Old Fashioned. It was a huge hit around back in the days of our tasting room, along with it’s brother the Alpine Manhattan. Yes, in our mind these cocktails are brothers. One is stiff and refreshingly honest, while one is strong with sweet overtones that smooth away any worries, like an old pal with an infectious sense of humor.
For these recipes we have swapped out muddled sugar cubes and the vermouth in two classic cocktails for our DRAM Pine Syrup, made with organic sugar and wild foraged Colorado Pine Needles.
Both of these cocktails provide an unusual regional twist, and sophistication to impress any guest, while still being simple enough for the novice home bartender.
A word of warning- our Pine Syrup is extremely delicious and addicting. We’ve heard stories from desperate ladies whose husbands devoured multiple bottles that were hidden away as Christmas presents. You’d be wise to buy more than your own share. 🙂
The Alpine Manhattan Cocktail
Add bourbon, pine syrup and bitters to a martini shaker or mixing glass over ice. Stir OR Shake. The jury is still out on this one, and we suggest you experiment to find out which method your palate prefers. Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass and garnish with orange peel or brandied cherries for an added kiss of sweetness.
The Alpine Old Fashioned Cocktail
- 1.5 oz. Good Rye Whiskey. We suggest Bulleit, Whipper Snapper or High West Double Rye
- 1 oz. DRAM Pine Syrup
- muddle orange slice
- 5 shakes DRAM Black Bitters
- Sparkling water
- Alderwood Smoked Salt (if you don’t have it, don’t sweat it. Its wonderful without too)
Muddle the orange slice in the bottom of a mixing glass. Add ice and then all other ingredients. Stir very well to distribute all the flavors. Strain into a clean glass over fresh ice. Add a splash of sparkling water, a dash more bitters for good measure and garnish with a sprig of pine, or an orange slice dusted in smoked salt. Woo woo!
